Executive Order Establishing U.S. Space Academy
The president of the United States issued an executive order Aug. 28 establishing the United States Space Academy. The executive order creates the Presidential Commission on the United States Space Academy and directs the commission “to evaluate the option of establishing the Space Academy within NASA, including actions necessary to implement such a structure.”
The executive order describes the Space Academy as a “NASA-led Federal academy dedicated to combining rigorous technical education with leadership development, discipline, and a durable commitment to public service. The Space Academy will develop a professional corps of civically grounded leaders prepared to advance American interests within the space domain.”
The order directs the commission, among other things, to make recommendations to the president on “service obligations for graduates, including service in the Armed Forces and civilian Federal service and the conditions under which such obligations should be fulfilled.”
The order also states that the NASA Administrator will serve as the chair and the NASA Deputy Administrator as the executive director of the Presidential Commission on the United States Space Academy. The Department of the Air Force will also participate in the commission, alongside other federal agencies.
The Association & Foundation will continue to monitor developments and gather information about the Space Academy. We will share relevant information with graduates as we learn more, consistent with our mission to support the Academy, serve graduates and preserve the heritage of the institution.
