Raising Private Funds

In this section, you will find a link to a PowerPoint presentation on the history of AOG fundraising, how the United States Military Academy (USMA) and the United States Naval Academy (USNA) fundraising efforts are structured, and a concept to support this core purpose of the AOG. The presentation includes 16 questions for further discussion. Please view the presentation first so that our discussion and exchange will flow from a common point of reference. 1. Process by which funds are raised?

 

2. Is our cost of fund raising in line with other similar functions?

 

3. Investment of funds, strategy, costs, conflicts and returns?

 

4. Control of funds?

 

5. Are adequate funds projected to be available for AOG operations?

 

6. Does the process of raising funds give adequate recognition to the dignity and purpose of all gifts?

 

7. Does the process of stewardship of these funds (giving them away) have the right balance of membership and donor control?

 

8. Does the membership have an understanding of why the Academy and the AOG need to be supported with philanthropic giving?

 

9. Should all funds be subjected to the same governance source or do we need to articulate a process that segregates them by source?

 

10. Can we develop an approach to investment and stewardship that will inspire confidence in the givers that the purpose, perpetual nature, investment responsibility and long term intention will be honored and sustained?

 

11. Can we develop an approach to raising, investment and stewardship these funds that give those who give major gifts the opportunity for active, continuing and satisfying participation?

 

12. Can we develop a process that inspires other smaller, existing foundations to consolidate their donor efforts and investable resources with the Joint Investment Account?

 

13. Can we develop answers to these questions that can be implemented with an change to the current bylaws?

 

14. Can we bring the experience, knowledge and passion of the CSC and the current Board to bear on these issues in time to provide a strong, positive recommendation to the next board?

 

15. Is the current campaign Case Statement adequately specific as to the use of funds to be raised to solicit participation and support accountability?

 

16. How would a foundation be different from the Campaign Steering Committee?
